Across The Pond - Pusan, Korea

In Korea, I was assigned to the USA General Dispensary 545th Medical Company, located on the southern most tip of South Korea in 'Pusan', but I had first landed in the north of the peninsula. The weather at Uson, airport, was bitterly cold and sheets of ice had covered the streets. Ice-cycles had drapped the roofs of every building. Army issued coal-oil heaters were burning everywhere and Korean Nationals 'called 'Katusas' would shadow every American job skill and who would trained and serve in that skill as 'diplomats and interpretors'. The American Army would also serve as diplomats to the Korean Nationals.

All American soldiers stationed on the Peninsula, including the great 'JeJu or Jejudo' Island located offshore and to the south would be given a course of instruction in Korean customs and language, before we left "Uson'. We were all packed into a small building like sardines but, allowed to move freely to use the vending machines and go outside to smoke. After signing tons of paperwork we were transported to a 5 star Hotel for the evening and told to return the next day. Americans were treated like royality. The Korean Hospitality was unmatched by anything I had ever seen on the U.S. mainland.

The next morning we all reported back to the same building. It was not long before we were on a Train traveling south. Uson was the farthest city north in South Korea. Only 5 miles from the demilitarized zone 'DMZ'. I would travel south to 'Camp Hialeah' in Pusan, the southern most city on the pennensula. It took about 6 hours, making stops for soldiers who were assigned to other posts along the way. I taxied into Camp Hiaheah and reported to the Company Orderly room. There I would receive my post processing paperwork, linen and shown the barracks where I would stay for the remainder of my overseas tour. The room I was given was private and measured about 20 x 12.

I completed my Inprocessing in about 3 days. The Photograph depicts the rear side of the barracks. I stood in the front yard of who I later learned was the highest 'GS' General Staff, 'civilian liason for 'Internet Security ITS' in the country. Mr Ware, from Alabama, spoke Korean, married to a Korean woman and was a computer hacker with a ton of disk of pirated software. He was the friendliest and most highly repected person on the Post.
